3 Important Things To Do On Your Wordpress Blog
1 ) Default Link Structures - Boring
Change your permalinks structure, so they look more professional to the human eyes & more search engine friendly, here’s what I mean:
yourblog.com/?p=1 vs yourblog.com/2007/04/04/name-of-post vs yourblog.com/name-of-post - Don’t you think the 3rd link looks much better?
Here’s how you do it…..
- Inside your wordpress admin, click on “settings” then click on “permalinks“
- Change the “Custom Structure:” to /%postname%
2 ) XML Sitemaps - Good Stuff
XML-sitemaps can help your blog get indexed on Google more easily. I’m not good at explaining these kind of stuff so all I can say is - just install it & forget about it.
Just in case you’re interested to learn about benefits of XML-sitemaps, but I suggest you don’t bother reading it.
Download & install Google Site Map Generator Plugin. All instructions are provided.
3 ) Title Tags - SEO 101
Title tags are very important for on-page search engine optimization (SEO). So you have to make good use of it. Again, I’m not good at explaining stuff like this. Just install & use it.
Download & install SEO Title Tag Plugin. All instructions are provided.
Is that all? Of course not, there are so just way too many plugins available! I’ve got at least 20 plugins on each & every of my blog, most of them I set up & forget about it.
As always, I never give you some ideas & leave you hanging there…..

Hey Samuel! I skipped the first part and just went straight to options and custom. It seems to work. I have no idea how to find that .htaccess file. Thanks for the tip!
No problem! Without the .htaccess file, how did you manage to change your permalinks?
Let me guess, you used Permalinks Migration Plugin? Or Permalinks Redirect Plugin? Maybe it just happened to be fine?
Let this comment be an update to my blog post, it is much easier to use this plugin than to manually CHMOD the .htaccess file.
Hi Samuel,
I cannot remember whether i changed the .htaccess file but for my other blogs I did not change and it worked fine too. No plugin was used. Any ideas why?
I have no idea how it can work without the .htacess file but since you can get things done without updating .htaccess & without adding a plugin, good for you! You saved time by doing less
Hello!
Well, I am new with this. I tried to do the same than Maki and Alvin, but it did not result. I must do what you describe in 1 but (excuse my ignorance) what is “CHMOD .htaccess file”? I have to change the name of the file?
Thanks for your help!
Hey Gianmarco,
Not you are not ignorant, when we all started, some of us even have problems with FTP, haha. Sorry that I assumed that everyone knows all the terms that I talk about.
CHMOD means changing your file permissions, you can do that in your FTP software or inside your Cpanel. You need to right click on the file & change the permissions.
