Google Analytics Tracking Code (Late Update)
Google Analytics code was changed recently so time to update…..
Placing Google Analytics tracking code on wordpress is so easy, just use this Google Analytics Plugin & you can get it done with messing around with a single line of HTML or PHP code. I mentioned this in my Strategic Blogging Manifesto.
Now, you will face some problems if you have many HTML static pages because you need to switch over to the new analytics code, you might even have to do it all manually.
I decided to ask for some advice from ROI Revolution, one of the best Google Analytics expert. Below is my email correspondence with Meredith Smith, Director of Marketing.
Samuel:
I got a question to ask you. On one domain, I have a blog as well as many static HTML pages. The static HTML pages are using the old tracking code but the blog is using the latest tracking code. Will this affect the overall tracking functions?
Meredith:
The new Google Analytics tracking code (ga.js) will NOT work with the previous tracking code (urchin.js). They are not compatible, so all pages on your site should be updated with the new code. Sources predict that that Google will continue supporting the current (urchin.js) version for another 12 - 18 months.
Once Google stops supporting the current version, service will be disrupted for everybody who has not switched over to the new version with the (ga.js) tracking code.
I came across this article on how to add Google Analytics code to PHP static pages. That was a very good article written by Google. Just in case they change the code in future, we just have to change one page rather than having to manually edit many static pages.
Then I wanted to see if I could add footer code on HTML pages instead of PHP pages. I tried it but due to my lack of HTML skills, it did not really work for me. Since I was stuck with many static html pages with the old analytics code & I had no choice but to manually edit all of them. I had to change all my HTML pages to PHP just to get it done.
