Joel Christopher Live In Singapore
Recently, I met Joel Christopher, the master list builder, while he was in Singapore.
If you do not know him, he was marketing online way before many of the so-called gurus you know about. He was conducting a workshop here & I was invited to the pre-workshop networking session.
As usual, during such networking sessions, you get a couple of beginners asking the same few questions such as…
- can ordinary people really make money online?
- what should I sell online?
- how do I start?
Unfortunately for them, such questions can never be answered in a sentence or even a paragraph. I do not blame them for asking such questions, we all started just like that, right?
Finally it was our turn, the intermediate & advanced online marketers, to talk to Joel. We took some photos too. (From the left: Samuel, Martin, Joel, Alvin, Jag)
I must say that Joel is a very friendly, warm & sincere person. You see, I had the impression that most of these people who teach online marketing were “pure direct marketers”, meaning - they do not give a damn about others, even their customers. But Joel really is a very nice guy.
He was sharing about how he got started marketing online, his past career, his future plans & much more. Then he shared about the differences between marketing workshops in U.S & in Asia.
He is also very passionate about self-improvement stuff. (I wonder why so many marketers love self-improvement stuff, are we marketers really such information junkies?)
I asked a question which everyone was curious to ask but did not have a chance to ask, the question was - if you were to enter a brand new market where nobody knows you & you know nobody, how would you go about?
Without even pondering, he started to talk about doing market research, then keyword research, testing affiliate offers, blah, blah, you probably know the rest as well… unless you are really very new.
Then I asked him, what if I am not really an expert in anything at all, what can I do? He then defined what really is an expert…
An expert does not need to have certain academic qualifications. In reality, an expert is simply someone who can do something a little better than most people. - Joel Christopher
He also mentioned about reviewing & promoting products that you have used before & you those that you like. Sharing of personal experience in your content is a great way to promote affiliate products. (I know, I do that all the time!)
After that he started to talk about the mistakes that most people make when trying to start their business online, such as not doing their proper market research and end up in a market much more competitive than they can handle. Or entering markets where no audience exist!
Next is selling internet marketing products to other internet marketers or blogging products to other bloggers. This is a big problem, many people who start online, after reading too many emails & salesletters, they think that it is the only market that they can be in.
That is way wrong! There are so many more markets out there with audience whom are much easier to sell to!
This is also an issue of integrity…
- how can someone who have NEVER gone swimming before, teach you how to swim?
- how can someone who has NEVER made a cent online, teach you how to make money online?
Overall, I had a good experience listening to Joel. Unfortunately for me, I was unable to make it for his workshop, maybe next time…
